“The rabbit hutch that went awry: Playboy Great Gorge had seven hundred rooms, a twenty-seven-hole championship golf course, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, five restaurants, a cabaret venue, a discotheque, and enough convention space for up to four thousand people—all in the tiny village of McAfee within the vast township of Vernon. When Playboy enterprises stumbled in the 1980’s, so did this high-heeled alpine resort. In the last years of the twentieth century, the property’s new name became the Legends Resort and Country Club.”
